The ancient land of Gangho is ruled by six martial arts clans. All of whom are bent on controlling the other. War rages in the streets as young martial artists vie to separate themselves from the pack.
Amongst the throngs of would-be masters lies one assassin. A plague to all of the ruling factions of Gangho, a shadow that cannot be caught, able to defeat any form of martial arts, this mysterious hero roams Gangho slaying many of the more villainous disciples that are tearing the world apart.
His actions are revered by the peasants of Gangho and he is considered to be the most powerful hero the world has ever seen. His deeds are those of legend, and his name the most highly spoken on the lips of the common peoples. To them he is a god, the “God of the Sky”
The “God of the sky” is believed to have mastered all the forms of martial arts and created his own style, seen only by his enemies before he dispatches them. The style is believed to be an amalgamation of all of the styles known in the world, the purest form of martial arts imaginable.
Years pass as the mysterious assassin continues his war on the dominating factions of the world. Until an event occurs that shakes the very foundations of the people’s beliefs and the world of Murim itself.
A beautiful young princess, accompanied by a score of her father’s troops is found murdered, surrounded by the corpses of her entourage most of whom did not even have time to unsheathe their weapons. When the gruesome scene is found by the remainder of her father’s guards, only one of the princess’s entourage remained alive, naming the “God of the Sky” as her murderer. The remaining guard, so stricken with grief at having been unable to stop the killings, denounces the “God of the Sky” as a traitorous murderer and then takes his own life.
As the news spreads through the world of the macabre happenings, the people of Gangho are thrown into disarray. Their Hero the “God of the sky” is labeled as a fiend, and his good name is tarnished forever.
For months the clans of the world hunt the once great hero who has now apparently begun killing at random, his final victims being that of an entire clan house, the White Swallows. When the White Swallows members are found dead, amongst their bodies lay a single scroll, the Scroll of Forgotten Secrets, detailing in full the techniques of the “God of the Skies” martial arts style.
Highly revered as the ultimate in martial arts knowledge the scroll of forgotten secrets is much discussed by the leaders of the six ruling clans. Their final decision was to split the scroll into six parts, so that no one faction could learn the ultimate martial style, and potentially rule the others. After the division, the six parts of the scroll are scattered to secret locations throughout the world, each with a clan as its guardian.
As time passed it was discovered that the six pieces of the Scroll of Forgotten secrets were related to one another in certain ways. Three of the pieces taught the style of the Dragon, and three taught the style of the Tiger. Realizing this, three of the clans holding the Dragon pieces and three of the clans holding the tiger pieces began to meet in secret, in an effort to reunite their pieces and master the philosophies and styles taught within.
Three clans applied themselves to the Soul of the Dragon philosophy. Adhering to the principles that the mind, body and spirit must all be as one in order to achieve the ultimate in martial prowess.
Consumed by their quest for enlightenment the Dragon Souls praise their sections of the scroll as the ultimate martial arts truth. That peace and justice must be secured by those that have sacrificed for their art, and that in order for one to be complete one must first understand what it means to let go of one’s inhibitions and desires. Those that adhere to the “Soul of the Dragon” philosophy believe that through rigorous ritualistic practice and training, they can begin to come close to the “God of the Sky” martial prowess.
The remaining three clans adopted the philosophy of the Heart of the tiger. The ultimate scroll teaching them that only through independence and following one’s own desires can one become the ultimate martial artist. They abhor the concepts of repetitive practice and quiet meditation, preferring to challenge themselves against other opponents. Those that have the Heart of the tiger feel that only through trials of pain can one achieve the supreme understanding of martial arts. They are chaotic and reckless, but their unpredictability is the key to their martial prowess. In order to truly understand martial arts, one must be free to follow ones heart.
While the two philosophies are both powerful in their own right, the clans who have created them realize that they are incomplete. The “God of the Sky” original scroll was six pieces, not three, and in order to truly master his style the scroll must be completed. It is for this reason that the philosophies of Dragon and Tiger have come to oppose one another, stuck in an endless battle to capture the remaining three pieces of the scroll from the opposing side.
Now in this time of troubles, new adventurers enter the scene, bent on mastering all forms of martial arts, and reclaiming the lost pieces of the scroll for their side. Loyal to the Dragon Souls or Tiger Hearts, these warriors spread throughout the land like the great wings of a dragon as it lifts itself into the sky…
