It’s quite difficult to come up with something new in the fantasy MMORPG genre, especially since there are so many different games out there battling for the same audience. However, with enough motivation and a big enough budget, something good can still come out, provided that the developers are creative enough to use the funds for something worthwhile.
Savage Hunt & Dragon's Prophet gambled it all on dragons, because that’s the main attraction about it and the most important gameplay mechanics in the entire game. Hence, if you are a dragon lover, you’ll certainly appreciate all the flying lizards you can battle, ride, or capture. Otherwise, you might just see this as yet another MMORPG loaded with hours of grinding and not enough new stuff to be worth the bother.
As such, the game tells the story of a realm by the name of Auratia, where dragons roam free and brave warriors learn how to tame and use them in battle. You are one of these warriors, and you get to play a significant role in the events that are about to unfold, just to add one more cliche on top of the stack. To make matters even more painful, there are only four classes to choose from, although they are pretty different from a gameplay point of view.
Your dragon is of capital importance the further you get into the game, because you must use both of your skills to survive the environments. Not only that, but you can also enter arenas and fight other people using your dragons, which can indeed get pretty fun. However, the casual nature of the game is quite obvious most of the time and there’s barely any depth when it comes to professions, crafting, leveling, or anything else for that matter.
Thankfully, the game and the environments look pretty good, especially when it comes to the winged monsters and the landscapes you get to visit. Sure, the world is not as detailed as in other, more popular MMOs, but you get plenty to admire in exchange for nothing but a bit of your time. However, there are many problems concerning the animations, as well as quite a lot of crashes to ruin your fun.
In the end, Savage Hunt & Dragon's Prophet could have turned out to be quite the success if the gameplay was more engaging and the rest of the mechanics were refined. Alas, that is not the case, and this is certainly all about the dragons, which get boring after a few minutes anyway.
