Puzzle games usually try to strike a balance between difficulty and fun, although it all depends on the players most of the time. Hence, some may have a lot more fun if the puzzles are extremely difficult, while others may give up whenever they stumble onto something that doesn’t allow them to freely explore the game world. It’s never easy to please everyone, but there are a couple of tricks developers can use to work around this issue.
'n Verlore Verstand is a first-person platformer with tough puzzles in which you have to find your way across eye-catching levels and make it to the end with no guides or hints. It’s a herculean task sometimes, but not because the puzzles are particularly tough, but mostly because you are not given any help when it comes to navigation. On top of that, you are never told what your goal is or what the puzzles ask of you.
There’s not much of a story either, since you do not play a specific role or follow an actual plot from start to finish. While this is not usually a problem in platformers, most tend to have at least some kind of theme to keep you engaged. 'n Verlore Verstand lacks all of it, which means that it can be very difficult to slip into any type of mood while playing it.
The platforming is pretty solid on the other hand, which means that at least you can have fun navigating the environment and trying to nail the toughest jumps. Your character has the ability to perform quite long jumps, which allows you to reach places that seem too far away at first. It’s also possible to sprint for as long as you want, although it’s not as useful as you might think most of the time.
The great thing is that you can have total trust in the controls, which is extremely important in a platformer. On the other hand, some of the ledges have bad collision mechanics, which cause you to fall before the terrain actually ends. As for the graphics, everything is more or less alright in this regard, especially since the game also supports virtual reality headsets such as Oculus Rift.
In the end, 'n Verlore Verstand is certainly not a masterpiece of the genre, but it may interest a few players out there. Be warned, though, because the puzzles have no sort of explanation and it can be difficult to figure things out on your own.
