Visual novels are designed to be relaxing and somewhat engaging, especially those that present you with slightly more complex stories that feature multiple important characters. However, there are also those that are basically glorified dating sims, and they fill a very important niche in the market as well. Thus, they too can provide you with a few hours of fun every now and again.

XOXO Droplets is an otome visual novel that features a restrained cast of characters and an emphasis on your ability to search for a mate. There’s not much of an actual story going on in the background, since the main goal is to find someone to share a relationship with. On the other hand, even that can turn into an adventure if you go in with the right attitude.

The first interesting thing is that you have the power to give a name to your character, which means that the plot does not revolve around a specific person. As such, the plot is all about a girl who finally gets accepted to her dream boarding school, where she can start having fun and maybe learn something as well. Naturally, it’s the boys that are the most interesting.

Since this is basically a dating sim, most of your time is spent trying to get friendly with various boys, and you do that by having conversations with them. The game is split into a day-by-day format, which allows you to undertake certain actions and watch them come to fruition along the way. This also makes it a lot easier to replay the game and take different choices.

As for the artwork, it’s worth noting that the artwork is not complete yet, which means that some of the background images are just sketches at the moment. This is not as annoying as you might think, at least not every time. Other than that, the characters are quite nicely drawn, and there are plenty of interesting landscapes to decorate the background throughout the game.

Even if XOXO Droplets is not very serious, it can still keep you busy for a while, at least if you do not mind the lack of depth in the characters or the story. On the other hand, that becomes obvious from the first few minutes of gameplay.
