World in Conflict Demo

Since history has been accurately portrayed in movies, books and video games countless times by now, especially when it comes to war, developers are forced to improvise in order to come up with new ideas. Hence, alternative histories are created, where certain events do not happen and the present world looks entirely different than what it is today.

World in Conflict tackles a scenario in which the Berlin Wall did not fall and the Russian forces begin their conquest, by invading Europe. While the NATO organization quickly assembles its troops and responds to the threat, the Soviets come up with yet another surprise and somehow invade the USA, capturing a few large cities and states in the process.

Throughout the main campaign, you will have to reclaim the lost territory and push back the communist forces, using everything at your disposal to do so. Thus, by playing the role of a field commander with control over tanks, infantry and various other type of troops, you must use the urban environments to your advantage and put an end to the invasion, as well as take the war to their front.

The gameplay style is somewhat familiar to every other RTS title, in the sense that you get a few squads that are controlled using your mouse. You also get to enter buildings and fortify positions, or call for air drops to augment your army. On the other hand, the camera controls are a bit weird, since you have to pan it using the keyboard and do everything else with the mouse, which can be quite awkward until you get used to it.

Visually-speaking, the game looks and feels exceptional, mainly due to the fact that a lot of effort went into creating realistic environments, thanks to the implementation of a next-gen physics engine. Thus, every building can be demolished in a very realistic way, while the terrain quickly crumbles under heavy artillery and gives birth to craters, which can work against you in battle.

Even if World in Conflict has a few rough edges that need polishing, the game as a whole manages to provide you with a satisfying experience, especially when it comes to strategy and tactics. This, coupled with the original storyline and the cinematic elements added to increase the suspense, make the title a definite must-have for any RTS enthusiast.
