Strategy games are about much more than having the bigger guns in a fight, since positioning and army composition are also quite vital when it comes to the final result. In some cases, morale is capital as well, given the fact that soldiers stop performing very well under pressure and they can fall prey to intimidation if they happen to be battling against much more experienced foes.
World War II Frontline Command is a real-time tactics and strategy game that allows you to see whether you’ve got what it takes to tackle the greatest battles in WWII, using a fixed number of units and only your wits to keep you from being overwhelmed by the enemy forces. From D-Day to Berlin, you can lay siege to most of Europe and battle across infamous fronts, trying to overcome the Nazi threat and free the world from tyranny.
Since this isn’t a classic RTS, there is no resource gathering to talk about, nor base-building mechanics and troop acquisition. In essence, you get a fixed number of units at the beginning of each mission and you have to use them from start to finish as effectively as you can, although you do receive reinforcements once in a while, especially when things get tricky and you need additional fire support to break the enemy lines.
Regardless of whether you are a die-hard fan of the genre, or it is your first time playing a RTT game, you can be sure that the mechanics and the interface are easy-to-grasp and functional at the same time. Thus, it is very simple to pick-up and run with it, but it is certainly quite difficult to become a master and learn how to properly arrange, use and dispose of the units on the battlefield.
Moreover, a great deal of effort went into the graphics engine as well, since the scenery is beautiful and the landscapes are incredibly detailed, with plenty of vegetation and architecture spread around to make it look believable. Moreover, the buildings can be occupied and destroyed, in case you want to gain a tactical advantage over the enemy or drive him out of cover.
Although it may not be quite as deep as the Sudden Strike series, or various other such hardcore franchises, World War II Frontline Command does manage to set itself apart from the rest of the casual crowd. Hence, the intricate mechanics can please even the most demanding of fans, while the intuitive interface is perfect to lure beginners in as well.
