Although wolves are somewhat despised by people, mainly because they used to raid sheep herds and even put humans in danger, they are certainly not evil creatures. Predators need to hunt in order to survive, and slow-moving sheep herds are the kind of occasion a wolf wouldn’t miss, especially if it was hungry and had puppies to feed as well.

WolfQuest is a unique simulator that allows you to play the role of a wolf, as well as try to survive the perils of nature and even establish a family for yourself. Given the fact that the game is actually developed by the Minnesota Zoo and people who are familiar with wolves and their behavior, you should expect a certain degree of realism in certain aspects. Naturally, this is still a video game, so you shouldn’t take everything for granted.

You start by creating a wolf and choosing whether you want to be a male or a female. It is also possible to pick a few cosmetic traits and adjust the abilities of your wolf. There are three sliders that can be modified: power, stamina and speed. Obviously, moving one of them affects the others, although stamina and speed do not affect the power slider. Depending on these settings, your wolf can be either faster, more resilient, or exceptionally powerful.

The life of a wolf is by no means easy, especially since you start alone. The HP bar is constantly dropping, which means that you have to feed regularly or risk death. You can hunt elk by entering the scent vision mode and detecting their presence using your extra-sensitive nose. The same works for finding nearby wolves, although there are subtle differences. Speaking of which, once you meet another wolf you get the chance to communicate with it. Only short and fixed phrases can be used, which are supposedly modeled after years of observations on real wolf packs.

In case you get bored with the single player mode, the game also supports multiplayer. There, you have the chance to compete with other players for territory, or even work together and form a successful hunting pack. The graphics are not very fancy, but they are good enough to pass as decent. For some reason, there is harsh music playing in the background, but you can thankfully turn it off whenever you want.

In the end, WolfQuest is certainly a breath of fresh air in the industry, since there are very few similar games out there. The fact that it is designed by people who are schooled on the subject is that much more exciting, as is the fact that you can enjoy the experience in multiplayer.
