Up until recently, having a job meant learning the intricacies of a profession and getting better at it throughout your entire life, such as being a smithy or a cook. Hence, people depended entirely on themselves in order to make a living and see the fruits of their labor. Nowadays, most people work for someone else, doing repetitive tasks that require either very little skill or way too much patience for the tiny amount of money they are paid.
Winter Novel is a unique visual novel that provides you with a glimpse behind the curtain most people work so hard to uphold in public. Hence, it’s a non-interactive story about two people who manage to find each other and form a connection when nothing else seems to work for them. Unfortunately, you do not have the power to change the story or make decisions, so you just have to sit and watch.
The story revolves around Sveta and Vlad, two youngsters who are depressed and deeply unhappy with their lives and jobs. Sveta works as an intern at a bank, while Vlad is a programmer designing websites. Somehow, the two of them team up for a common project, which is how their tale begins. Thus, they find out how having someone else besides you can make everything fade in the background.
One of the most striking things about the game is how real everything feels, even if the game draws a lot of its ideas and practices from anime. Hence, the characters are nicely described, not to mention the fact that their emotions are presented in a very realistic way. The story as a whole evolves unexpectedly as well, even if you might see some of the events coming every now and again.
The artwork is another interesting part of the game, mainly because it’s actually ASCII, which is a very ancient way of rendering pictures. Younger gamers may not be aware of it, but this way the standard way of illustrating images back in the day, and it’s actually still used in games like Dwarf Fortress. The soundtrack is old school as well, and it sounds very convincing most of the time.
All things considered, Winter Novel is certainly unique, and that alone is reason enough to give it a try. Hence, it’s got a wonderful story and nice character arches, not to mention the interesting graphics and the pleasant soundtrack playing in the background.
