Wings of Vi is a strange 2D platformer developed and published by a studio named Grynsoft. It’s throwback to the old games in this genre, but it’s capturing the feeling of that bygone era.
Building a 2D platformer that tries to imitate the old 16-bit game is a tall order because users always remember those games fondly, but they are just that, a memory. Many of the games that we played a quarter of a century ago would be terrible if we were to play it today. They game problems, the level design was terrible, and most of the time the control scheme was atrocious.
The difference was that back then there weren’t too many games and players had to adapt and learn. There wasn’t any choice. Now we have lots of choices, so if we happen to play a game that’s not good enough, we can just cast it aside and try something else.
Vi is an angel (what else) and she receives a mission, to defeat Demon Lord Jeh’oul after he escaped. The players will go on a long journey and face many of his minions, and eventually catch him.
Wings of Vi is a 2D platformer, which means that you will be jumping around trying not to die, defeat some enemies, and figure out how to get past some obstacles that have been put in place by the developers.
Remember that I mentioned earlier the control scheme of older games? Well, when you start to control Vi you’ll notice that she responds very well to commands, and players have an easy time moving her around.
The biggest issue is the level design, which was needlessly made complicated from the start. You will notice that many times you’re hitting the ceiling during regular jumps, forcing you to return to a previous checkpoint. Some of the platforms are too long or too short, and some of the obstacles are placed in such a way that players will most likely have to try multiple times to get past them.
Wings of Vi is difficult, but it’s only a choice of design. The overall quality of Wings of Vi is not bad, but it could have been much better with a little bit more attention to the level design.
