Combining genres is something that was far more difficult to do in the past, back when the technology was very limiting with developers. However, modern tools allow anyone to quickly integrate FPS elements into RPGs, as well as many other interesting combinations. Hence, you might wonder if one could take it a bit too far in this regard, especially in the case of indie productions.
Winged Sakura: Endless Dream is a very intriguing game that features visual novel, RPG, tower defense and roguelike elements, which is about as confusing as it sounds. However, the developers make it work in the end, at least if you have the patience to go through the tutorial and learn how everything works. There are procedurally-generated levels as well, which make for a great replay value.
To begin with, the game might be a complex mix of genres, but on top of all that are the colorful anime influences. Thus, beautiful anime girls play the main roles throughout the game, and you can actually choose from four different characters, as well as three unique classes. After that, it’s all a matter of exploration and strategy, because you have to defend your territory from enemies in a fairly classic tower defense manner.
Another neat idea is the fact that every room you visit has a specific element, such as neutral, lightning and fire. This affects the gameplay and the nature of the enemies, as well as your tactics if you wish to come out victorious. The levels are split into preparation and combat phases, meaning that you get to place your structures before the attacks commence, as well as choose the best strategy to withstand the enemy waves.
Lastly, there’s is also a survival mode to really push your patience to the limit, not to mention all the different sakuras you can collect and master along the way. In terms of graphics, the game is as colorful as it gets in the genre, sporting bright colors and cute anime characters to keep you engaged along the way. The music is not bad either, and the sound effects are nice as well.
In the end, Winged Sakura: Endless Dream has all the right ingredients to keep you busy for a long time, especially when you consider the procedurally-generated levels. The strategy elements are quite refined, despite what you may believe at first.
