Post-apocalyptic scenarios usually attract a lot of attention and success, regardless of whether they are used in video games, movies or TV shows. Hence, the Fallout series, the Mad Max movies and many other productions have gained a lot of popularity all over the world, although there were many that flopped over the years as well.
Wasteland Angel is a top-down arcade shooter in which your primary purpose is to shoot as many enemies as possible, while avoiding being shot yourself. There’s not much depth involved in the idea, but if the gameplay works smoothly and there are enough engaging elements to keep you focused on the action, such a game can still keep you entertained for a few hours, at least until you finish it.
There is even a story running in the background to explain the events, one that features a brave woman by the name of Angel, whose purpose is to defend the remaining survivors from the dangers of the wasteland. Mutants and various gangs have occupied most of the wild territories out there, which means that you’ll have to face them all at some point if you intend to keep your people safe from harm.
All of the action takes place in desert-like environments, where you have to drive a car around and shoot everything that comes close. The pace is quite fast and there’s not a lot of time to think, but you won’t need to do that too much anyway. Obviously, there are power-ups you can pick-up, not to mention the fact that your weapons and vehicle can be upgraded as well, in order to make them more resilient and deadly.
Although the visual style tries to emulate old games from a long time ago, the graphics engine is by no means weak. It’s not amazing either, but it displays cool special effects and the 3D models are pretty detailed, even if you look at them from very high up. To everyone’s delight, there are boss fights involved as well, but you get to jump into a first-person perspective in order to deal with them, which is a nice touch.
Unfortunately, Wasteland Angel’s greatest flaw is the fact that it gets annoyingly repetitive quite fast, since the environments are more or less the same and you don’t get to do anything other than shoot the same enemies over and over again. Hence, the game may only be fun for a very short while, after which you won’t feel any desire to go back in again.
