Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine is a somewhat successful experiment from the Relic Entertainment studio, which is mostly known for making real-time strategies.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine is a third-person shooter set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, obviously. It sticks to canon, but it shows how life on the ground would be for a space marine, the iconic unit that anyone can recognize. With a name like that, you would expect to see an awesome game. That’s exactly the case, but it seems that it didn’t sit well with the established fans of the franchise.
When you play strategy games in the Warhammer universe for so many years, it’s difficult to think out of the box. The guys from Relic are big fans of this franchise, and they wanted to do something different. They made Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine and it’s a great game. It has its flaws, but overall it’s much better than you would expect.

The developers knew that they had to make the marines truly awesome, and since they have a chainsaw swords in their arsenal, that wasn’t all that difficult. The emphasis is put on melee weapons, but they only work in conjuncture with the regular ones.
The main character, Titus, is sent to the planet of Gaia to investigate the recent Ork attacks. He finds himself, along with his two companions, right in the middle of a siege. He lands and starts making his way into the forge, only to find that the Ork invasion is not exactly so clear cut.
In Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, players have access to an arsenal of weapons, but they can only carry four of them at any given point. From time to time, you’ll get access to a jet pack, and the main melee weapon is upgraded as you proceed through the story.
The engine used in the game does its job wonderfully, and most of the time it’s a pleasure to play it. Not all of the level design is great, but since this is the only game of its kind, any fan of the Warhammer should give it a try.
