Franchises like Commandos had a massive impact on the real-time tactics genre, and it’s still the go-to reference whenever the subject is brought up. The plethora of tactical options put at your disposal, together with the freedom of being able to do virtually anything you want on the map made the experience unforgettable. However, many other games managed to achieve that as well since then; it’s just that the genre is not very popular and never has been.

War Wound aims to emulate the gameplay seen in much bigger titles, only it somehow manages to forget the most important ingredients. As such, the emphasis is put on shooting all the enemies and clearing the maps, which is clearly not the point of the genre. There is no stealth to talk about, your units are basically indigo copies of each other, and the AI is atrocious to say the least.

Each mission has a certain objective, but although it varies on paper, you always have to kill everything that moves in order to move on. As such, whether your orders are to occupy a certain position or infiltrate a facility, you still end up having to hunt every enemy soldier on the map. While this wouldn’t be too much of a problem in some circumstances, the AI makes the experience unbearable from start to finish.

The thing with the AI is that it either stands still in one place, waiting for you to stumble into it, or it does the opposite thing and swarms on you regardless of whether you’ve just fired a gun miles away from them. Given the fact that their aim is flawless and you have no way of healing your squad members, the experience gets rather boring and annoying relatively quickly.

If that’s not enough, you still have to deal with the graphics and the interface as well, which try their best to make things as difficult as possible for you. As such, the camera can either be fixed or dynamic, but both options are terrible. If it’s fixed, you have to use the keyboard to pan it, which is annoying, but if it’s dynamic, it jiggles about every time you move the mouse, not just when you touch the corners.

In the end, War Wound fails to display even a single strong point, which is why there are not an awful lot of reasons to recommend the title. However, if you have a strong tolerance for stress and you do not mind the lack of purpose altogether, the game can at least provide you with a distraction from the day-to-day routine.
