Waking the Glares is a title that’s currently being built so it can create a unique experience. It’s a game that right from the start is riddled in mystery, the kind that doesn’t scare you, but makes you want to dive deeper and deeper into the story.
The demo is aimed to briefly explain what the game is about without actually giving any details. You get a rather short and appealing introduction to all of its seven chapters, what they will look like, where in the world they are or might be and so on, but nothing that actually gives away anything from the actual story.
You wake up in what looks to be a typical neighborhood, on a sunny day, next to a burnt down house. Birds sing and fly around, trees sway in the wind and all you have is a dossier about some book chapter and a strange medallion in your hand.
You have no idea how you got there, or what you have to do, so, you start to explore. As you do so, the medallion acts like a compass, guiding you to key places in the word you find yourself. This is where things start to get interesting because after you find another dossier, a letter and a few dolls, you are briefly dragged into different fragments of time and the universe where things are either eerie or beautiful but always mysterious.
They might be pieces from your past life or the same existence carried out simultaneously in parallel worlds, there’s no way of telling, but you’re free to use your imagination.
Waking the Glares is currently under development, still in its early stages, but even so it looks very good. It’s being pieced together using Unreal Engine 4 and you can already tell it’s going to completely capture your eyes once it’s finished.
Intended for virtual reality use, gameplay will be focused on exploration and minimal but crucial interaction with the world around, but you’ll get a better glimpse of that once you play the demo.
After a brief but consistent look, Waking the Glares seems to be on the right track. It looks good, gameplay is simple and allows you to focus on the experience at hand, and the story, well, we have no idea of what it is, but what it might be seems very interesting.
