Velocity Stream: Practice Mode

‘Procedurally generated’ or ‘randomly created’ are terms that are gaining a lot of traction in the gaming world lately and that’s actually great. With the appearance of procedurally generated levels, in a large palette of game types comes a considerable increase in difficulty.

Space racing games are some that have started to perfect procedurally generated tracks but Velocity Stream has figured something out. It’s fun for three people to race each other on a randomly created track in deep space but why not add a fourth who has the task of actually creating the track however he or she pleases at the same time the others are racing on it.

The rules in Velocity Stream are quite simple. The racers have to compete against each other to reach the Paver that’s building the track they are racing on. The Paver’s job is to create the twistiest most difficult track it can to make sure the racers fall off as often as possible, ensuring they never catch it.

It’s a really nice twist to the idea of a space racing game and it’s certainly appealing. Apart from getting a different track every time you race, you know that instead of an algorithm, you have a friend that’s totally dedicated to making that track as messed up as possible.

This is merely a taste of the core feature of the game and it’s really looking good. In this demo you’ll have the possibility to race one of three ships, each one with a unique look, not the Paver though.

Since it’s still work in progress, there is plenty of polishing that needs to be done and the game has a few bugs that show up at times but it’s not enough to make the experience unpleasant. The racers handle well, the tracks can get really complicated and since it’s created right in front of you, skill is the only thing you can rely on.

Velocity Stream not only brings forth a new kind of random that benefits everyone, but it also looks really good even in it’s early stages of life.
