Gods have been on people’s minds ever since the human race had enough brainpower to wonder about natural phenomena and various other existential questions that could not be answered with observations at the time. However, simple ideas evolved into fully-grown religions over time, and there are still many beliefs around the world that worship various gods.
VERSUS: The Elite Trials is a text-based adventure game in which you get to make your own choices and guide the character you create through an intricate web of events. There’s no actual goal or missions, but you can mold the story as you desire, which allows you to reach multiple endings and re-play the adventure many times without doing the same things twice.
In short, you play the role of an agent trying to spy on the gods and maybe infiltrate their ranks, although it’s also possible to do the other thing around and trick the people who hired you in the first place. You can steal memories and superpowers from anyone, so it comes in handy when you are dealing with gods that are way more powerful than you are in almost every regard.
As mentioned before, your decisions always have an impact on the plot, so it’s important to think about the next action. Granted, there’s nothing to press you in this regard, given the fact that you have all the time in the world to select the desired option. The writing is quite nice as well, so the action feels pretty genuine, even when there are dialog or combat sequences.
Lastly, the lack of graphics and sounds may get on the nerves of some people, especially if you are not used to play a game without visual or audio aids. You can easily get accustomed to it after a while, on the other hand, depending on how much you like to read. Your imagination can do much more than a meager graphics engine, especially if the story gets to you.
In the end, VERSUS: The Elite Trials features an interesting premise and a great presentation, even if it’s in the form of pure text with no images or a soundtrack. However, it’s a wonderful experience for those who like to have total control over the story and the main character.
