Upwards, Lonely Robot is a 2D platformer that takes the gameplay to the vertical. It’s developed by Random Layers and published by Kasedo Games.
Who says that platformers need to take place in a horizontal playing level? The developers from Random Layers are trying on something different with Upwards, Lonely Robot, which will take players by surprise. Even if it’s a platformer, the gameplay seems new and refreshing, although not without its faults.
To make things even better, the developers decided to include a story so that the nice title of the game will make some sense. It’s not something mind blowing, but it will keep the players going and trying to beat the next level, even if it will seem impossible at the later levels.
The developers are saying that you control a robot that climbing some mysterious towards and we need to believe them, but you will notice that the “robot” looks very much like a sphere. It’s difficult to give it any anthropomorphic features, but that shouldn't be a problem.
The concept of the game is pretty simple. You control the robot, and you can make it jump from one level to another. There is some physics involved, but you shouldn’t really worry about that. The rules that are governing this world are pretty lax. Even if you fall, you won’t be damaged, but that means that you have pretty much failed.
Each level is on a timer, so you need to move fast and without making too many big mistakes. The timer can be replenished if you collect the fruit that’s lying around, but you will have to weigh that against the risk of hitting some of the enemies.
The various animals like snails or wasps that stand in your way have predetermined paths, so they shouldn't pose a massive risk, but things tend to change when you’re in a hurry.
The control scheme is pretty simple and controllers are supported. The levels included in the demo are not all that difficult. It seems like a fun game to try, even if only for the challenge of finishing the levels on time.
