Underhero Demo
Hear the tale of an unlikely hero in this retro platformer sporting a humorous story and classic arcade mechanics. #Retro platformer #Role-playing game #Arcade platformer #Platformer #Sidescroller #Role-play
Heroes are constantly portrayed as righteous superhumans in most video games, especially in RPGs that allow you to start as a lowly peasant and end up as the most powerful warrior in the realm. However, maybe it’s not necessary for the hero to be a good guy from the beginning, and it may even be a lot more fun to play as a character with questionable motives.
Underhero is not your typical role-playing game, and it tries very hard to be different from the rest of the RPGs out there. Starting with the fact that it features retro 2D graphics, all the way to the unusual story and hilarious characters, everything about the game is somewhat unique, although you can pick up on a lot of references to classic RPGs released over the years.
To begin with, the story is mighty intriguing, since it’s a real rollercoaster for the first few minutes. As such, you start playing with a classic hero, sporting a cape and everything. You are heading toward the last and most powerful boss, when a couple of lowly minions set up a trap for you. However, unlike in every other game out there, the hero actually gets tricked in this case, which causes him to die. Thus, you resume playing as one of the said minions, which is where the real story begins.
The gameplay is a neat combination of RPG and platformer mechanics. Although you can run around and jump like in a classic sidescroller, you also have to talk with other creatures, buy yourself better equipment, and participate in reflex-based combat. Speaking of which, the combat is quite intricate and interesting, although it may take you a bit to get familiar with the mechanics at first.
As far as the visual quality is concerned, everything is designed to look as retro as possible, which means pixelated characters and low-resolution backgrounds. On the other hand, the artwork is great, not to mention the fact that every character is unique in some way. The soundtrack is lovely as well, featuring old-school tunes that are liable to cause a few involuntary flashbacks.
Although Underhero is still in an early stage as of right now, there’s a lot of potential in the game, especially if the developers stay on course. The humorous approach makes it easier to get acquainted with the unusual ideas flying around, especially if you are up for something new.
