Toy Defense: Sci-Fi is the fourth release in the Toy Defense series and this time aims to take you on the futuristic side of warfare. In this version, instead of toy soldiers you have a number of towers that are built to do serious damage to incoming waves of enemies.
Right off the bat, Toy Defense: Sci-Fi looks really nice. Colors are vibrant, towers and enemy models are very well designed, overall, from most aspects it’s top notch. Visual effects are well crafted and the audio isn’t half bad either.
If you’ve played the previous versions of Toy Defense you’ll feel right at home in most part but if you’re new, there are plenty for you to discover along the way. One thing that kind of ruins the chances of a great first-time experience with Toy Defense: Sci-Fi is the fact that there is no tutorial and hovering the mouse cursor over the icons of towers and in-game options doesn’t reveal any kind of hints.
For the TD buff, having variety is a must for any game of the genre. Toy Defense: Sci-Fi is somewhere in the middle, it has only four towers to choose from but plenty of upgrades and abilities to purchase. You get towers for general use, mass kills, single target and of course, anti-air.
Each tower type has its own unique upgrades and they really do make a difference. These can be purchased using in-game credit that you earn after each round and it depends on your performance. Moreover there are also upgrades for your base and additional arsenal to acquire.
A nice mechanic that Toy Defense: Sci-Fi uses is the possibility to retrieve a number of your most upgraded towers so you can reuse them in the next round.
On a closing note, Toy Defense: Sci-Fi is a good tower defense game that has plenty to offer. It’s far from perfect or from being truly challenging but as far as casual TD games go, this one hits the spot.
