For a 2D platformer to be enjoyable, a few basic elements must work in tandem and provide the players with both a challenge and a fun experience at the same time. Thus, sometimes it’s all about making the levels as tricky as possible, yet not too frustrating as to make the players quit. However, smooth controls are also an important factor, not to mention pleasant graphics and a nice soundtrack.
Tommy Tronic is a 2D retro platformer that allows you to experience the joy of classic gameplay mechanics and do your best to pass each level. Not only that, but you also have access to a variety of weapons and special items that can make progress that much easier and exciting. Coupled with decent controls and a pretty graphics engine, everything should be just right to remind you of the good old times.
As far as the story is concerned, you obviously play the role of Tommy, a small child who goes on a quest to find his puppy. Along the way, a variety of creatures try to make his journey as difficult as possible, including many different kinds of monsters. However, Tommy is quite the smart kid and he somehow has access to a scary arsenal of weapons, which are more than capable to deal with any kind of critter.
Although the game is pretty polished from a technical point of view, there are some mistakes that can raise your frustration levels in a matter of seconds. As such, you usually need to collect keys in order to unlock the way further, but there are doors that do not lead anywhere. However, the keys are still spent and you can end up stuck because of this, with a reload being the only option left.
As previously mentioned, things are more than decent when it comes to graphics and level design. There are plenty of hidden areas and tricky sections that require good coordination, which makes the experience that much more memorable. The visual quality is top-notch as well, although you still have to get used to the lack of a third dimension if you are new to the genre.
In the end, Tommy Tronic can easily find a place in your game library, as long as you enjoy challenging platformers of this kind. You can easily get over the few gameplay flaws present in the game, as well as cope with the more difficult sections that require precise reflexes.
