There are only so many ways you can reimagine the platformer genre, and it’s that much more difficult to bring something new to it nowadays. However, creative individuals can always come up with new things, especially now when there are so many simple tools for developers to quickly prototype their ideas. Hence, the Think To Die series is a pretty good example of how you can mix things around.
Think To Die 3 is the third part in the series and it brings more of the same, with a few slight differences when it comes to gameplay and level design. In case you are not familiar with the franchise, the main goal throughout the levels is to find a way for your characters to commit suicide. Usually this means finding spikes and jumping into them, but things get more difficult later on.
Speaking of which, sometimes you have to use multiple characters in order to achieve your goal, but it’s important to plan ahead, given the fact that you have to put many things in motion. On top of that, all the characters must be killed off, since it’s not enough for just one to be killed. This adds more complexity, especially since you have to restart the stage a couple of times until you figure things out.
This third episode in the series comes with a few other additions as well, including a level editor, new objects and somewhat improved physics. There are still times when you have no idea why a certain thing worked, and you may never be able to reproduce it again, but these are minor problems most of the time. The editor should allow you to put your creativity to the test.
As for the graphics, they have certainly improved over time, but don’t expect anything extraordinary either. It’s a still a bummer that there are not many textures covering the landscape, and not many interesting backgrounds either. Thankfully, the controls are smooth and responsive, which is very important in a platformer.
In the end, Think To Die 3 may not be the most polished game out there, and it can get pretty boring after a few levels, but at least it’s different from everything else out there. Hence, the full version should be quite enjoyable.
