Sometimes, video games can pass into the realm of art and gain a reputation for having a very good story or impressive artwork. Hence, Planescape: Torment got recognition for its profound philosophical issues presented throughout the plot, which made everything else about the game slightly less relevant, including the poor graphics and the sometimes sketchy gameplay choices.

The Sea Will Claim Everything doesn’t look like much at a first glance, since it actually seems to be designed for small children, given the lively colors and the silly environments. However, once the text pops up and you start reading, everything changes and you realize this is actually much more than just a casual adventure game with a few puzzles here and there.

As such, the story includes philosophical aspects and views, not to mention a variety of other serious matters about the human condition. Most of them are pretty upbeat, but you may stumble into some rather grim points of view as well. In essence, your role is to try and heal an Underhome, which is a house that’s actually alive, somehow. Not only that, but the action takes place in the Lands of Dream, so everything might be a bit fuzzy every now and again.

Unlike many other adventure games, The Sea Will Claim Everything is not as interactive as you might expect. In fact, most of the time you either have to read things, or you have to ponder at various riddles in order to come up with an answer. The puzzles themselves are not too difficult, but they require some inspiration to get right and they can get you stuck on occasion.

Visually, everything is as colorful as possible, with broad brush strokes and creative environments. Given the fact that the world is dream-like, not a lot of emphasis is put on realism, so you should take everything you see with a pinch of salt and learn to accept a few weird concepts. The same goes for the music, although the tracks get very repetitive after a while.

When it’s all said and done, The Sea Will Claim Everything may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it certainly makes a nice addition to everyone’s library. Hence, if you are in the mood for something a tad strange, yet beautiful, look no further than this.
