The Polynomial - Space of the music is a space shooter that makes use of fractals to animate the environments.
Some games are simply too weird to describe, and The Polynomial - Space of the music definitely falls into this category. Its maker, Dmytry Lavrov, defines this game as a space shooter, and that's as good as any. The truth is that if we look beyond this classification, it's really hard to pinpoint what makes this game tick.
The term space shooter is pretentious, and it can cover up a lot of ground. I'm not sure that it applies to this game just because you have six degrees of freedom. It looks like it's happening in space, so the definition is as good as any.
I never did LSD or any other drug, but I can only imagine that people who do this stuff must see similar things. With the exception of the main menu, which kind of looks like something that fits into a game, the rest is almost a complete mystery.
It took me a while just to figure out what was I supposed to do, let alone finish a level. The idea is to rack as many kill as possible without getting killed. You won't know at first why you keep dying, but eventually you'll notice some small ships (they could be ships) that are shooting back.
The ship your flying has some pretty impressive auto aim, so it won't be difficult to hit them. In the meantime, the rest of the level is animated by songs and fractals. It's hard to know what's going on, but it looks like there is a planet below. ' There is no story, from what I could gather, so it's a race for the high score, most of the time. Since the game has really low system requirements, it's quite possible that pretty much anyone with a computer will be able to play it.
The demo for The Polynomial - Space of the music is rather short, but it's more than enough to shed some light on the gameplay.
