Most video games try their best to provide you with a good time and make your experience as relaxing as possible, not to mention fun. However, the survival-horror genre disregards such notions entirely, and it toys with your sanity while practically daring you to keep playing, despite your better judgment. Vicarious thrills are hard to resist, on the other hand, which is why horror games usually have a numerous sizable rooting for them.

The Mors is a first-person horror game in which survival is your only purpose, with nothing else to distract you from the said goal. Something is out there to get you, it cannot be stopped, and it will eventually get you. However, with enough luck and a bit of preparation, you can outsmart or at least outrun it, in order to get to the bottom of the mystery and maybe make sense of the entire thing.

In essence, the story is not yet fully explained in the demo at hand, but you get a glimpse at the plot and what it may hold in store for the final version. As such, the action takes place in some sort of abandoned mine, which is layered into different platforms. Your job is to get down to the last platform, while avoiding the creature roaming the corridors. Naturally, there are some puzzles to tackle along the way, so it’s not all about running around scared.

Since exploration is the main gameplay ingredient, you have a variety of options at your disposal in order to make sure that you can survive an encounter. As such, you can pick up matches and light the candles you stumble into along the way, as a warning mechanism against the creature. Hence, whenever the monster approaches, the candles go dark and you at least know the direction it’s coming from.

Alternatively, your character’s smartphone can be used to shed a bit of light on the environment, although it can also give away your position. Speaking of which, hiding may not be manly, but it is an important skill you’ll have to learn if you want to survive. By crawling under objects and keeping silent, you can get away from danger without having to face it.

In the end, The Mors unfortunately fails to provide the players with too much of an experience, mainly because the level design is boring and rather lackluster. You never really get to see what’s after you, which is not a bad thing at all, except that you also don’t have much of a clue what triggers the attacks. Hence, even if that may not be the case, it all feels like a game of chance, and there’s nothing scary about that.
