Guiding balls through mazes is actually a pretty popular theme in the world of video games, because the challenge of keeping a marble from falling or rolling into obstacles is fairly enjoyable. Most of these games are designed to test your quick thinking, on the other hand, because the goal appears to be getting to the end of each stage as quickly as possible.
The Little Ball That Could is a tad different than the rest of the games in the genre, because it focuses on your ability to solve puzzles and think outside the box instead. Hence, although you still have to control a marble like in all the other similar titles, it’s a lot more important to solve puzzles and find your way out of the mazes than it is to get to the end as quickly as possible.
The marble in question is also fairly delicate, which means that unless you land from a safe height or on special surfaces, the ball breaks into pieces and you are forced to restart from the latest checkpoint. Naturally, the levels are designed to get more difficult later on, with the first ones being much easier to handle in order for you to get accustomed to the mechanics.
As mentioned before, the levels are much more intricate, and so are the traps you have to avoid along the way. Whether it’s spikes that come out of the ground at regular intervals or platforms that push you into the void, every kind of obstacles requires a different approach. Sometimes it’s important to move quickly and stay out of harm’s way, while other times you just have to take your time and carefully plan your moves.
In terms of controls, it would be a shame if they weren’t polished enough, but thankfully that is not the case here. You can pretty much figure everything out from the first few minutes of gameplay, and you can also use a gamepad if you are more comfortable with one. The graphics are very clean and enjoyable as well, especially since the color themes change from one world to the other.
The Little Ball That Could is about as fun as it could be under the circumstances, given the fact that it’s not a game for everyone. Hence, you can get a lot of enjoyment out of it if you like tough platformers and challenging puzzles.
