The Guilt and the Shadow Prologue

The Guilt and the Shadow Prologue is one seriously short and atmospheric game. It’s a 2D, narrative-driven puzzle platformer in which you dive into the life and mind of a very strange man.

The prologue at hand is meant to introduce you to the world in which your protagonist lives. It’s encapsulated in a broad spectrum of greys and dipped in some very well-crafted audio effects. By far, it has one of the best atmospheres you can find in a 2D puzzle game.

What’s around the central character makes no sense at first and that’s the thing that raises questions, it makes you curious. As you exit the room and enter a long hallway, things get even stranger and disturbing whispers can be heard from all around. You enter some rooms to explore and after a very short while, the game takes a turn for the strange.

In terms of design, The Guilt and the Shadow Prologue looks very good. However, when it comes to the animations, there will be a few things that might not please your eyes. For example, when the protagonist walks, he does that forward moonwalk thing that’s just not pleasant to see; at all.

A very interesting moment of the game is that when you reach the bathroom and start climbing or going down the ladders. It’s a wonderfully crafted and abstract moment of the game that really makes you wonder what other twisted and creative touches have been implemented. We can’t spoil the surprise, but it’s a neat little thing.

To end, The Guilt and the Shadow Prologue is an excellent game if you base your decisions on atmosphere alone. However, add in the relatively simple puzzles and a few glitches, then sum everything up again and you end up with a very good game.
