Exploration is a pretty engaging concept in video games nowadays, especially since modern technology allows for much greater worlds, which can even be randomly generated for a new adventure every time. The story is important, on the other hand, because no amount of procedurally-generated content is great enough to compete with a scripted storyline.
The Fall of Lazarus: The First Passenger is a first-person adventure game with exploration elements and puzzles to keep you from getting bored along the way. It all takes place in the future on some kind of spaceship, and your goal is to explore it and unravel the mysteries that seem to be everywhere. To make things even better, the game is rendered using the almighty Unreal Engine 4.
It all starts when the main character, Caleb Rogers, wakes up from a cryogenic sleep in the middle of a spaceship. Naturally, he starts to investigate his whereabouts and surroundings in order to understand where and when he is. To do so, he has to learn how to interact with all sorts of gadgets and computers, which are the actual puzzles.
The environment is pretty interactive as well, in the sense that you can open containers and even pick up items that might come in handy later on. As such, the puzzles sometimes require certain items in order to be solved, which is why it’s important that you pay attention to everything you come across in your journey. Even so, the demo at hand is not very long, so you don’t get the chance to see very much content.
As for the graphics, Unreal Engine 4 needs no introductions, since almost everyone should be aware of its capabilities by now. The level design is spot on as well, and you can tell that the designers have put some thought and work into the environments. Granted, the atmosphere is not quite there yet, but there’s plenty of time for this issue to be addressed.
In the end, The Fall of Lazarus: The First Passenger is certainly worthy to be on your watchlist, because it would appear that the developers know what they are doing. Hence, we can only hope that the full game is going to take things to the next level.
