History is plagued by wars and conflict, regardless of era, or the state of civilization at the time. However, some wars are more famous than others, whether because they caused a lot of death, or just because the battles they featured are regarded as being special from a strategic point of view. Hence, everyone is aware of the second World War, but not so many people know about the Punic Wars, or countless other conflicts.
The Falklands War: 1982 presents one of these lesser conflicts, known as the Falklands War. As the title practically gives it away, the war took place in 1982 and it had Great Britain and Argentina as participants. The prize was the ownership of the Falklands islands, which supposedly hold an important strategic value and they are thus a crucial objective for anyone who wants power in the area.
There are multiple scenarios to choose from, depending on which phase of the conflict you want to participate in. It is also possible to create your own scenarios from scratch, in order to take advantage of the technology put at your disposal by the game. Make no mistake, on the other hand, since The Falklands War: 1982 is about as intricate as it gets for a wargame, which is saying something, considering the nature of the genre.
You definitely need to read the manual before jumping into a scenario, because the game is based on a real military engine and there are way too many things you need to know before you can even begin to understand the interface. However, this provides you with a staggering degree of freedom and realism when it comes to putting various tactics into practice, since you really need to take everything into consideration before moving your units or shouting orders.
The game map is barely visible behind all the information it displays about the terrain and your troops, but it doesn’t feature any kind of detail or artwork anyway, so you’re not missing out on anything. In fact, the game is about as simple and rudimentary as it can be from an artistic point of view, since all the efforts were concentrated on realism and a challenging gameplay experience.
All things considered, The Falklands War: 1982 is not for everyone and it doesn’t try to be either. A lot of work is required if you are to play the game, but the effort is definitely worth it, especially since you can extend the experience as much as you want, thanks to the included editor and scenario creator.
