Indie games are on a constant supply with loads of people trying to find their niche into the industry. Whether they implement a new mechanic, develop on an existing style, come up with something totally experimental or simply revive an older concept, they create plenty.
Tankr is the latter, a game that’s built around an existing concept that features gameplay that’s fairly standard and not all that innovative. However, it still has a nice ring to it. For me, it’s tied to the fact that one of my favorite childhood games was Battle City. Tankr revolves around the same core notions and it’s nice.
At the time of writing this, Tankr is in its early stages of life and there is a lot of work left to it. Even the devs admit to that. However, at the core level, it’s a decent indie that has a lot of potential.
Gameplay of this sort is always enjoyable if you fancy arcade style games or titles that pitch you against your friends. Tankr will do that at some point but for now, it only has the solo campaign to showcase, and you have to defeat AI controlled tanks that multiply with each level you pass.
The good is in the fact that the controls are intuitive, and the gameplay is easy to master. The bad is in the fact that the AI is borderline basic, it will mostly wait around for you to kill it. It’s easy to do that too. Playing the campaign, your biggest threat will be yourself.
In terms of mechanics, the ricocheting projectiles are, at this time, Tankr’s best feature. As mentioned above, in the campaign you are your biggest enemy because most of the time you’ll die by your own bullet that ricochets and bounces right into your tank.
Tankr also needs a bit of a boost in gameplay speed, seeing the bullets come at you and having plenty of time to duck isn’t all that engaging. On the plus side, it does compensate with the fact that shooting crates can reveal random weapon upgrades that grant you a secondary fire.
On a closing note, Tankr could use improvements on most of its features. Until then, it’s a solid indie that can turn up looking and playing very well.
