Tanks are still a critical part of any army, even if technology now allows us to start and finish a war with AI-controlled drones only. However, a large-scale conflict would probably include troops on the ground as well, and modern machinery has made quite a few leaps in the last couple of decades when it comes to firepower and speed.
Tank Carnage is a simple action game in which you control a tank, with the only goal being the utter destruction of all the other tanks sharing the map with you. There are no actual missions and no story, which means that all you do is exchange projectiles with the enemy tanks on a rather empty map. Even so, the experience can be fun and engaging, at least if you are ready to deal with some major shortcomings.
To begin with, the bleak maps devoid of anything interesting can become very annoying and repetitive after a while. It would be nice to have places you can take cover behind, as well as multiple types of terrain. Mountains and a lake between the two enemy teams are the only environmental elements you’ll see, at least until the developer adds some more content.
The tanks are pretty unimpressive as well, since all they can do is fire the same kind of shells over and over again. There are multiple types of tanks, but the appearance is the only thing that changes, which is a bit of a bummer. On top of it all, the gameplay is very simple when it comes to the actual shooting as well, since all you have to do is move the turret around and shoot until you hit something.
As for the graphics, there’s nothing to get excited about in this regard either. Granted, the game doesn’t look bad, but the lack of proper level design makes it difficult to be lenient, since a lot more could have been done with just a little bit more patience. Hence, you see everything there is to see from the first few minutes of gameplay, thus making it difficult to stay excited about the game.
In the end, Tank Carnage is not exactly bad, it’s just very empty at the moment, which is a sign that the developer rushed to release an unfinished game. Hence, it needs better maps, more variety and at least some kind of a challenge when it comes to the gameplay mechanics.
