Tank Brawl is a local co-op game that’s inspired by the old Battle City. It’s developed and published by two developers, Thang Phung Dinh, and Dzung Phung Dinh.
If you’re old enough, you’re going to remember a game named Battle City, which was both frustrating and rewarding. Since the choices were pretty limited when Battle City was famous, back in the 1980’, there was little to compare it to. We liked almost any game that was released, so we liked Battle City, even if it was annoying at times, at least.
This was one of the games that would allow players to use both controllers and play in co-op mode. Tank Brawl wants players to relieve that feeling, even if most of the players how will remember that game would be in their 40s. It’s a tough sell, but Tank Brawl has enough potential to become at least likable, if not a major success.
The gameplay is quite straightforward, as you would expect from a game like this. You control a tank in a grid-like map, and you try to destroy the other tanks on the map. There are just a few a few tanks spawned at any given time, but your goal is to destroy them all.
It’s not all that difficult, or at least the levels included in the demo have been pretty easy to beat. Between levels you can upgrade your tank, for power, damage, resistance, and so on, and during the battle the other tanks might leave various power-ups behind.
It’s not a complicated system, and it only requires a minimal attention from the player. Since the game is built in the Unreal Engine, it looks pretty good, but since it doesn’t require huge maps or serious animations, it couldn’t have looked bad.
There are some problems as well. The AI is not all that smart. It doesn’t know to come after you, it doesn’t seem capable of tearing down the walls that are destructible, and it just wanders around the map, hoping to get a lucky shot. This is something that really needs to be fixed.
Tank Brawl has a lot of potential, and it would be fun to play in co-op, but it also requires a much better AI or a more aggressive one.
