Take the Cake is a 2D platformer with puzzle elements, in which you control a furball as it tries to navigate all sorts of obstacles in order to recover a cake. The gameplay mechanics are not particularly original or impressive, but the levels are very well-designed, which means that you really need to give it your best in order to overcome certain obstacles and make it to the end alive.

The story is told without using any words or dialog, since the furballs cannot talk. Hence, all you see is that a cake is being stolen in the beginning, and the furballs decide to go after the robot that snatched it. Given the style of gameplay and the lack of actual characters, it shouldn’t be too much of a problem that there is no dialog, so you can focus on the puzzles.

Your character’s main gimmick is the fact that he can grow or shrink at will, and this comes in handy throughout the game. Hence, sometimes you need to be as small as possible in order to fit through some corridors, while other times being bigger allows you to activate certain platforms with your weight. However, it’s also worth noting that the bigger you are the harder it is to jump, so it’s important to quickly shrink when a big leap is coming on.

The controls are very smooth and responsive as well, which is a must-have for platforms such as this one. There is no input lag to slow you down, so it’s very easy to navigate the levels if your reaction times are decent. In terms of graphics, the game can be a tad too simple sometimes, especially since many levels look the same, even if there are multiple environments along the way.

Take the Cake is a very polished platformer, and the physics puzzles are very fun to tackle and solve. Thus, it should be a treat for the fans of the genre, although the simple mechanics might make multiple playthroughs a bit boring.
