The 20th century was riddled with war and conflict, including two World Wars, Vietnam, Korea, and many others that only added to the total death toll. Not all wars were fought using guns, on the other hand, because different ideologies caused a lengthy, but silent conflict between the world’s top super powers starting from the 1950s.
Supreme Ruler: Cold War is a grand strategy game with 4x elements in which you get to experience the race between the two sides of the Cold War and change history to fit your preferences. In essence, almost everything is possible in the game, as long as you have a strategy to put your plans into practice and enough money to support them until the end.
The game features a campaign, a lot of scenarios, and a sandbox mode without any specific goals to achieve. Hence, the campaign revolves around the struggle between USA and USSR as they stocked up on nuclear weapons, developed military technologies and engaged in a space race. You can play with any side you wish and see whether you can change the outcome of the entire conflict, using everything from diplomacy to all-out war.
When it comes to gameplay, you are certainly going to feel overwhelmed when you first start a new game, due to the large number of options put at your disposal and the rather intimidating interface. However, everything should get easier to handle after a while, not to mention the fact that each function has its use and you get appreciate the variety after enough time has passed.
From a technical point of view, the graphics engine is certainly rather basic and unimpressive, but it gets the message across quite clearly. Since the map includes the entire world and almost every country there is, you shouldn’t be surprised to know that it is quite big. However, once you zoom out to move around easier, the frame rate drops considerably, although there are a few tweaks you can use to improve your experience.
In the end, Supreme Ruler: Cold War may have its fair share of flaws, but the overall product is quite decent and the complexity should be the perfect incentive for those who are looking for a challenge. The sandbox mode allows you to play as any country and basically just play with the world as you wish, which is certainly an attractive prospect.
