Super Squirrel Demo
Use your squirrel super powers to annihilate the evil robotic squirrels in this hardcore 2D platformer. #2D platformer #Hardcore platformer #Jump and run #Platformer #Squirrel #Robot
Evil robot squirrels are probably not very scary when you think about the concept, but that may be because you are not a squirrel yourself. Ten-inch tall rodents are far more likely to be intimidated by the idea, and it’s only natural. However, there are always heroes ready to face their fears and save everyone, which means that the squirrels probably have their own John Connor as well.
Super Squirrel is a 2D platformer in which you are challenged to survive a plethora of challenging levels, each one of which is designed to be as frustrating as possible. Speed is handsomely rewarded, but every wrong move ruins your chances to achieve the high score. As such, the experience is only fun if you are up for a challenge and you do not mind dying every other nanosecond.
There is a dim story behind all this, and it revolves around an evil robotic squirrel by the name of Shadowtail. In order to stay true to his reputation, Shadowtail has kidnapped a few squirrels and stolen precious gems from Squirreltopia. Naturally, someone has to get it all back and smack some sense into the bad guy, but the journey there is littered with traps and vicious enemies.
Most of the levels follow the classic platformer formula, which means that you have to jump over gaps with pixel-perfect precision, avoid deadly traps, and generally watch out for patrolling enemies. However, boss battles are also part of the mix, and you get to go head-to-head with giant creatures that can kill you in a matter of seconds. Obviously, the key to beating them is to pick up on their attack pattern and find a weak spot.
The visual department is about what you would expect from a 2D platformer, although the level designers did a wonderful job in most cases. Each stage is decorated with all sorts of interesting backgrounds, not to mention the silly-looking squirrels you get to play with. The music is nice as well, especially since it helps a lot with the atmosphere and it keeps you from getting bored too quickly.
To sum things up, Super Squirrel is one hell of a platformer, perhaps as challenging as Super Meat Boy. It does have its flaws, on the other hand, such as the fact that some sections require you to kill yourself and go back to the last checkpoint if you mess up the jumps.
