Streets of Rogue

Roguelikes are designed to be as replayable as possible, especially since most of them have randomly-generated levels and many possible character specializations to choose from. Thus, it’s always a new experience once you start descending into the dungeon. On the other hand, some may not be huge fans of classic fantasy tropes, which is why something more modern sounds like a good idea.

Streets of Rogue is a roguelike RPG in which you get to explore randomly-generated cities instead of dungeons, cities that are populated by all sorts of characters and places. However, the rest of the mechanics are more or less the same, except that you have to complete missions in order to be able to move into the next town and so on.

You can choose from a variety of characters, each one of which comes with other abilities and styles. Whether you are an assassin, a soldier or a gorilla, the experience is always different, not to mention the fact that the final version of the game is going to contain even more options to choose from. On top of that, you can also collect a variety of guns as you make your way around town.

The missions you tackle usually ask you to rescue people or break into heavily-guarded rooms, which means that combat is in order most of the time. You can use melee weapons like bats or batons, but guns are available as well later on. You can even use the environment to your advantage and trick enemies to run into traps and other hazards.

It’s actually surprising how complex Streets of Rogue is at this point, especially when you consider the fact that it’s not even finished. There are some bugs and issues to watch out for, on the other hand, such as clipping through walls after receiving a hit, but everything else appears to be in order. Moreover, you can also improve your character by choosing from a variety of skills and abilities.

All things considered, Streets of Rogue is quite the surprise, and it has a great shot at becoming a bestseller sometime in the future. However, it needs to be polished until them, and it also needs a decent soundtrack to keep you focused.
