Stay Dead Evolution an arcade fighting game that uses real locations, real actors, and real footage for all aspect of production.
Stay Dead Evolution is a fighting game at its core, but a more precise description would be quick time events bonanza. The developers from the Brucefilm studio have tried to do something special, and they weren’t the first ones to do it either. On the other hand, previous iterations of live action fighting games used full characters to animate fights in an artificial level.
The production itself for Stay Dead Evolution is interesting, even if the game itself is rather bland. Come to think of it, the developers had to know all the moves beforehand and have the actors film all the possible combinations. Since most of the fights are built with numerous cuts, we have to deduce that there weren’t too many problems with the moves.
One of the problems with live action actors and real environments is that you can’t actually control them like in a regular fighting game, or at least not yet. Maybe someday this will be possible. Until that happens, players will have to push buttons for quick time events just to play.
To be fair, the first fights are pretty easy, but the difficulty of the game increases with the speed of the events. It takes some getting used to, but it’s not all that difficult in the end. The fact that players are required to play this mini game and remember the possible moves, doesn’t make for great gameplay. If you pressed the keys right, you see the result in the animations that follow.
Stay Dead Evolution is made to resemble a really bad B movie, and surprisingly it managed to achieve this with ease. It’s one of the few redeeming qualities of the game and they aren’t many.
Also, since the game is made in this manner, the system requirements are pretty low and anyone with a five-year-old computer will be able to run this without any issues. The demo version is not long, but it’s enough to help users if they want the full release.
