Building things on other planets is not quite feasible yet, even if we can reach them using probes and various other machinery. However, given the current pace of technology, it shouldn’t take that long for people to leave the cozy warmth of Earth and look for other places to expand our civilization. When that happens, we’d better be prepared to deal with a few inconveniences as well.
StarKnights is a strategy game that makes the leap into the future a bit early, and it tries to envision how everything is going to look a few centuries from now. As such, humans are no longer confined to Earth and they have started to colonize the surrounding planets from the Solar system. However, it turns out that there are other civilizations out there as well, not all of which are as open to communication as we are.
In essence, the game plays a lot like an RTS, because you get to build bases and amass troops until you are confident that you can overpower your enemies. However, there are some TBS elements in there, which are mostly obvious during the actual battles. You also get the chance to manually build fleets by selecting the desired units. It may take a while to get familiar with the system, but it’s pretty straightforward after that.
Gathering resources is an important part of the game, because there are a lot of them and you need different kinds of materials in order to construct the spaceships you need. Whether it’s energy, crystals or various metals, each ship requires a certain amount of resources to be produced. Specific buildings are required as well, because it is pretty difficult to build a spaceship without a starport.
From a technical point of view, the game is not at all impressive, and it actually looks a tad too outdated for some tastes. The entire action takes place in a tiny window and it can be difficult to figure the buttons out when everything is so small. However, the artwork is decent and you get into the space mood with ease, as long as your imagination can pull its weight.
In the end, StarKnights has enough strong points to keep people interested for a while, although there are much better options out there. On the other hand, if you are looking for something a bit different and you do not mind the outdated graphics, this may very well be a good choice in the right circumstances.
