Combine the fun of exploring distant galaxy with the intricacies of role-playing and you might just have some fun. #Space sim #Role-playing game #Space combat #Space #Spaceship #Sim
Role-playing games are rather hard to imagine without a few swords here and there, not to mention a bit of magic and the occasional orc decorating the landscape. However, there are plenty of non-fantasy RPGs out there, some of which did quite well for themselves over the years. Probably the best example of this is the Fallout series, which is as far from green elven plains as possible.
Star Wolves is an even bolder attempt at providing the fans of the genre with something new to chew on, by taking the same formula and throwing it into space, to see if it still works. Hence, instead of controlling a party of heroes and exploring the darkest dungeons, you get to be in command of a spaceship squadron, complete with laser turrets and various other hi-tech accessories.
Story-wise, the writers tried their best to make the experience feel like it has a purpose, but don’t expect anything too memorable when it comes to the plot. Hence, you play the role of a pirate headhunter who must put an end to the criminal activity that plagues the galaxy. You are not alone, however, because you are joined by a team of highly-skilled fighters that follow your command.
The RPG elements come into play when you first create your character, because there are multiple classes to choose from and each one of them comes with a slightly different skill tree. Hence, you are free to customize this skill tree and choose to improve only the desired abilities, in case you want to specialize on a certain type of weapon, or you wish to become a better leader to inspire your comrades.
Plenty of tactics are involved when it comes to the battles, because you have the option to pause the action and give orders to the units under your commands. Things can get a bit too chaotic every now and again, but overall, the experience should be both challenging and fun at the same time. As a cherry on top, the graphics are sublime and you’ll often find yourself gazing at the beautiful vistas in front of your eyes.
All things considered, Star Wolves could have been a much more successful titles if only the developers worked a tad harder on it. However, the final product feels a bit rushed and empty, especially since the story does not manage to keep you interested for too long.
