Star Prospector Demo

The strategy genre is very flexible, although there are some basic elements that must be present in order for the game to be considered a success. However, a wide array of other gimmicks can be thrown into the mix at the same time, such as role-playing elements, or even a touch of adventure. Star Prospector went with the RPG idea and included some interesting concepts into the formula for good measure.

The game presents a rather interesting story, one that involves distant planets, warp gates and powerful mining companies that send people to different corners of the galaxy in order to gather resources for them. These people are called prospectors and they must do the job alone, which means that they have to explore the planet in question, assemble a base and start mining the resources all by themselves.

The plot starts to take shape when the Scavengers - people who were exiled from Earth quite a while ago - begin to rebel against Earth and the mining companies, in order to destroy their operations. Since their numbers keep on rising, not to mention the fact that the different Scavenger tribes start to unite with each other, the people on Earth take a rough decision.

As far as the gameplay mechanics are concerned, they are basic RTS for the most part, which means that you get to use a single prospector to build a base and start producing units. On the other hand, the role-playing elements come into play when combat ensues, since the units can take advantage of the experience they gain after each fight and get stronger.

Although the demo is not very representative for the final product, one might say it needs a lot more mechanics and better gameplay to attract the public. Hence, even if the idea is quite original and engaging, the lack of action can inspire boredom most of the time. Fortunately, the visual quality is quite nice and it is obvious that the designers put a lot of effort into the artwork and the models that can be seen in the game.

In the end, Star Prospector can use a lot of additional content and some more engaging gameplay mechanics in order to be successful. However, the game is on the right path and it can certainly get a lot better with a bit of work and dedication from the developers.
