Splice is a puzzle game developed and published by Cipher Prime Studios. It’s not the kind of game that you can just pick up and play, but it’s really rewarding once you get the hang of it.

Not all puzzle games are the same, and some of them are quite alien. Splice is the kind of game that it takes a while to understand, which is usually a good thing, especially if it’s a puzzle. In fact, the name puzzle only applies since players have to find a solution for each level, but that’s pretty much it. Nothing else about this game will feel familiar in any way.

There are no guides to help players and developers from Cipher Prime Studios know this all too well. In Splice, you will have to learn to do new things and think along the lines of the game, and not the other way around. Since Splice doesn’t use any know gameplay mechanic, you can’t just apply something that you learned in another instance.

As you can easily imagine, the game doesn’t have any kind of story behind it, so the players are only left with the gameplay. The learning curve is not all that steep, and most players won’t have a problem with the first levels, but Splice gets difficult very fast and soon you’ll be wondering some poor life choices that you’ve recently made.

The developers from Cipher Prime Studios say that most of the puzzles can be solved with a limited number of moves (splices), which is where the difficulty lies. You can’t just move around the pieces until they fit, you need to understand how the system works and what can be done in a certain level. All of this need to happen before you begin to solve the problem that’s been given.

Even if many of the first levels have the role of a tutorial, many players will be stumped pretty fast. The idea is to keep trying because you will eventually figure it your and you’re going to be surprised just how easy it was.

The demo only has the first strand, but the full game has about 75 levels.
