Coming up with solutions to puzzles is the fun part in video games, but it can also turn into a chore if the mechanics are not polished. They can also be too difficult sometimes, which frustrates players and might cause a few early abandons. On the other hand, the challenge should be part of the experience, at least in this specific genre.

Spellcaster Adventure is a fast-paced puzzle game with RPG elements and a pretty engaging set of gameplay mechanics, in which your goal is to quickly form words using the letters in front of you. The kicker is that you have to move quickly and keep it snappy, otherwise your enemies strike back before you get a chance to do the same, and it doesn’t take much to lose a round to the AI.

Another interesting gameplay element is that you can choose one of three possible characters at the beginning of the story. Each character has different skills and multiple paths to follow as they get stronger, which adds immense replayability to the game. On the other hand, the actual mechanics are the same, so your character does not matter as much as it appears at first.

Even if the fast-paced nature of the game can be pretty stressful and annoying sometimes, the challenge is what makes you come back for more after every defeat. It would be nice to have some sort of relaxed mode without a time limit just to explore all the possibilities and combinations, but then again that would take most of the challenge out of the game.

As far as the graphics are concerned, everything is about as basic as you would expect, but that’s not a bad thing in this case. Each enemy is nicely detailed and unique in terms of artwork, and there are a few simple special effects added on top when a special ability is cast. The soundtrack is fairly nice too, depending on how long your play sessions are, because it can get repetitive after a while.

When it’s all said and done, Spellcaster Adventure is actually a very enjoyable game if you are in the right frame of mind, although it can also be too frustrating for some. The multiple character choices allow you to play the whole thing again without getting bored.
