There’s quite the abundance of indie top-down shooters that have emerged in the recent months, and more are on the way. However, when it comes to fast-paced pixel-art creations that really push your reflexes and skill, they will always get attention.

SpaceJammers is one of those little indies that although uses a game concept that’s been around for quite a while now, manages to pull off a unique look and style. It’s still about shooting stuff; it’s still about surviving a level until you get what you need to move on to the next challenge.

What’s different in SpaceJammers, but not entirely original, is the way it all plays out. For one, each character is fitted with a melee or ranged default attack but they also come with three special abilities. The latter can be upgraded using gems that are dropped when you kill an enemy.

Secondly, the difficulty level is slightly off the charts, and you can feel that, no matter how skilled you are when it comes to games of this sort.

It’s a bit annoying to have to reset the game to fullscreen every time I restart a round, and there are a few other minor setbacks. However, those are expected since the game still is in its early stages of development. Nonetheless, what matters is that the gameplay feels solid.

When playing SpaceJammers, the mood is right and the little touches to animation and the sudden slow motion moments are a nice treat. Even the characters are fun to look at, there’s something menacing about a pink squirrel-like creature with a lightsaber for a weapon.

As with most games of this nature, SpaceJammers supplies the multiplayer co-op feature. It makes it al lot easier to beat, and it also enhances the fun factor. It’s something worth keeping an eye on.
