VR is slowly gaining the traction it deserves, especially since computers are now powerful enough to run incredibly immersive experiences without feeling cheap. Granted, there’s still more to go until the technology reaches maturity, especially since not many triple-A studios are approaching the subject, even if some giants are taking serious steps in this direction, such as Bethesda with Fallout, Skyrim and Doom.
Space Dream VR is a very interesting project designed to help you relax and make the most of your VR headset. In short, this is a first-person exploration game that provides you with an open world full of interesting landscapes, not to mention the fact that it takes input from the music playing on your computer to adjust the special effects and create a wonderful atmosphere.
You are free to use any virtual reality device, including Oculus and Vive, and the game supports gamepads, keyboards and regular screens as well, so a VR headset is not mandatory either. The demo at hand features a single map, which is in outer space, but the full game promises additional environments with different themes, which should make the experience much more engaging.
To make it easier to move around the map, the game allows you to switch between walking and flying, which is necessary if you want to reach asteroids, other planet and suspended islands in the vastness of space. On the other hand, the controls are a bit annoying, since it can be difficult to control the character sometimes, at least with a mouse & keyboard combo.
As far as the graphics are concerned, they are certainly colorful, especially thanks to the thick layer of post-processing effects added on top. Things get even more interesting if you put some music while playing, because the sound waves have a gorgeous effect on the game world. Hence, it’s nice that you can pick your own soundtrack, although there’s a bit of in-game music as well.
In the end, Space Dream VR is not quite there yet, but it certainly has the right ideas to keep people engaged for a few hours. On the other hand, the control must be smoothed out a bit, and a bit of optimization wouldn’t hurt either.
Note: Space Dream VR can be played with or without a VR headset.
