RPGs usually feature more than enough magic to please everyone, especially those that take place in fantasy worlds ruled by powerful mages, monsters and various types of demons. Controlling magic is what gets people in trouble, however, because it’s very easy to lose control and come to the conclusion that you should be ruling the world with the power you have.

Sorcery Is for Saps is a text-based role-playing game in which you play the role of a sorcerer/sorceress who somehow manages to be in the position to influence everything about the world with his or her actions. As you can probably tell, you are free to choose the gender of your hero, as well as many other things about your personality, magic powers and social status.

The whole action revolves around a cursed king and his inability to rule the kingdom anymore, which means that the invaders are about to win and take over the realm. Your role in the grand scheme of things depends on how you wish to approach the conflict, because you can either help the king get rid of the curse, or simply join the invaders and take down the kingdom along with them.

Although the main character is not particularly strong in the beginning, you can learn new tricks along the way and gain a lot more power, which helps a lot if you decide to go against everyone else and ruin the world by yourself. It is also possible to look for a partner and win his or her affection, and there are no restrictions when it comes to genders, which is definitely a nice touch.

Since the whole thing is text-based, you really need to enjoy reading in order to avoid boredom, which might be difficult for younger gamers used to Unreal Engine 4 and the like. However, if you like books in general this shouldn’t be too much of a stretch, and it’s actually a lot more exciting, given the fact that you are free to decide how the book evolves along the way.

Even if Sorcery Is for Saps needs to make do with a relatively small fan base, given the lack of 3D graphics or a soundtrack, the story very intriguing and enjoyable. Thus, you can get a few hours of entertainment out of the game, especially since you can go back and make different choices to see other sides of the story.
