Clear obstacle-ridden levels at breakneck speeds
In Sonic Heroes, you get to control three of the most famous characters from the Sonic universe, including Tails, Knuckles and Sonic himself. They are all running together through the levels and you can quickly switch between then whenever you want to, by pressing the appropriate keyboard shortcut. Since every character has his own special abilities, you must use all of them throughout the game if you want to advance.
As far as the actual environment is concerned, the 3D levels are much harder to follow than they were in the olden 2D platformer, since speed acquires a new meaning in this installment. Although you must use your keyboard to control the heroes, you more often than not feel like they are running on their own and each step can be your last, since you do not always have time to react accordingly to the obstacles.
Gather emeralds and defeat Doctor Eggman
As far as the story is concerned, Doctor Eggman is at it again, trying to put his evil schemes into motion in order to bring the world to its knees. At the end of each mission, you find one of the seven Chaos Emeralds, which, when all gathered, offer you the opportunity to defeat the doctor once and for all, making the world a safer place in the process.
Graphically speaking, the game is filled with bright colors and cute animations, as well as a lot of special effects to increase the sensation of speed you feel throughout the nauseating levels. The 3D environment is very well modeled, allowing you to finally enjoy the Sonic universe in its entirety and take advantage of the new dimension to perform incredible feats.
A fun an entertaining arcade game
All in all, Sonic Heroes preserves the feeling of the series, especially when it comes to accentuating Sonic's ability to move really fast. In addition, the companions you get control over provide you with more ways to take advantage of the environment, while also making the game slightly more difficult, since you have to keep all of them alive.
