There are many stereotypes out there, some of which are just playful and harmless while others are plain hurtful and mean. One of them is related to how girls with blonde hair are a bit less well-equipped in the brains department, with plenty of jokes going around on the subject. The game at hand pokes a bit of fun at them as well, although in a much more playful manner.
So Blonde is a point-and-click adventure game with colorful graphics and simple ideas driving the gameplay, yet just as intriguing as a regular title in the genre. Naturally, everything revolves around a clumsy blonde girl and her adventures, but underneath the layers of pink shirts and silly dialog, there are a few interesting puzzles that may be worth your time.
As such, the story starts with Sunny, a blonde girl that happens to be the daughter of some very wealthy people, on a cruise ship in the Caribbean. During a storm, lightning strikes the ship and Sunny disappears in the wreckage, only to wake up later on the shore of a tropical island. As it turns out, the island is stuck in the past and there are pirates ruling over it, which makes things a tad more complicated for Sunny.
The puzzles you have to solve are by no means complicated, but they can get you thinking every once in a while, especially since they are a bit weird. For example, her first concern after waking up on the shore of a strange island is to avoid talking to the locals until she can put some make-up on. Hence, it’s these kind of things you have to deal with on a regular basis, so don’t act surprised if it’s not as deep or complicated as other games in the genre.
Gameplay-wise, every point-and-click fan should be familiar with the controls right from the start. Using only your mouse, you can either observe or pick-up objects, which are then transferred to your inventory. Here, you can combine them together and use them for other purposes, in order keep the plot moving forwards. Dialog is also part of the game, as are a few mini-games that must be played in certain conditions.
When it’s all said and done, So Blonde is not the type of game that wins awards, but it certainly can be fun if you are in the right mood. Its casual nature might attract a lot of attention from inexperienced players as well, especially thanks to the bright color theme.
