Although war pictures usually show large armies confronting each other on the battlefield and hundreds of planes blacking out the sky, there are those who never appear in the photos, because they are not meant to be seen. Camouflaged and striking from great distances, snipers are used to penetrate otherwise unbreakable defenses, using their superior marksmanship skills to take out the targets without giving them a chance to retaliate.

Sniper Elite aims to show you first hand how snipers operated in the second world war, by allowing you to take on various missions and ultimately stop Stalin from putting his hands on nuclear technology, thus saving the entire world in the process. Unlike most war games, your purpose is to mostly avoid enemies and engage them only when the distance between you and the target is great enough to disable their ability to strike back.

As such, most of the time is spent crawling around the battlefield from corner to corner and using vantage points to take out the foes, such as rooftops or various other elevated spots. You can, however, also recur to less stealthy approaches, since it is possible to pick-up sub-machine guns, grenades and pistols. Using these, the surprise factor is sacrificed, but it can sometimes be your only option, especially in tight spaces.

Since it is, in the end, a sniper-based game, you are rewarded for achieving various feats of skill, such as hitting your targets from a great distance or killing two enemies with the same round. In case of a well-placed headshot from far away, the game rewards you with a slow motion cinematic that follows your bullet to its destination, complete with the gory impact scene to top it all off.

In order to render such detailed scenes, Sniper elite takes advantage of a state-of-the art graphic engine, capable of displaying a large amount of details across vast maps, together with high-resolution textures and various lighting effects to enhance image quality. The background is constantly filled with battlefield noises, including airplanes, shots fired, screams and explosions going off around you.

Although the missions might get a bit repetitive and linear after a few hours, they do keep you interested until the end, making Sniper Elite a very enjoyable game overall. The unique approach is also a bonus, since it provides you with a much more different view on the war than the rest of the first person shooters released before it.
