SnarfQuest Tales is an adventure game that’s born out of the popular Larry Elmore comic strip from the 80s and 90s in which the witty and sometimes way too straightforward Snarf finds himself in a new heap of trouble.
Right off the bat, SnarfQuest Tales benefits from some really good graphics, and it’s not even a finished product. What’s a bit awkward and hopefully will be resolved until the game launches, are some of the animations. They feel a bit robotic and unpolished. Other than that, the game features nice level designs.
Snarf is brought into the game in all his glory with his strange ears, spunky walk and devilish horns. He’s also created to have the same whimsical attitude and as always, bluffing is his primary weapon. Also, he still wants to get rich, fast.
There are others of course, but I think humor would be SnarfQuest Tale’s best asset. It’s visible from the first scene of the game, and when you reach the skeleton dude who’s locked up in a secret closet, it becomes even clearer. The interaction between the two is funny and humor always makes everything better.
Snarf will have his patented snappy comebacks but, unfortunately, the multiple choice dialogue feature is a bit shallow. It’s not about what the characters say; it’s about the order or the availability of the choices of speech you have. After you choose one, the rest become kind of irrelevant.
SnarfQuest Tales has a few things to straighten out, but it seems to be at a good start. With a bit more work it’s surely going to be one for the fans to appreciate.
