Sometimes, all you need is a simple idea to get a lot of people hooked on a game. Making the said game very difficult is another sure way to attract attention, because gamers like to destroy keyboards for some reason. As such, facile games like Angry Birds and Snake have managed to gain a huge following, even if they sport very basic gameplay mechanics when you get right down to it.

Snakebird is an interesting combination between Angry Birds and Snake, although it has a lot more in common with the latter. In essence, you have to move around colorful environments using the classic Snake mechanics, but the character you use is actually a really long bird. It doesn’t make too much sense to think about it, but you won’t have time to do so anyway, because frustration kicks in quickly.

The goal is to collect all the fruits and reach the exit portal, but that’s a lot easier said than done. You can move in any direction, but you need to be careful not to get stuck or fall off the map. Spikes and various other traps are part of the problem as well, and you need to calculate each move if you are to survive. Bonus points are awarded for time, but that’s going to be the last thing on your mind.

As harmless and colorful as it may look at first, Snakebird does not leave you with a warm fuzzy feeling inside. Instead, you’ll most likely be sweating and cursing in long-lost languages, given the inhumane level of difficulty displayed by some levels. Thankfully, there is usually more than one way to solve them, but that doesn’t mean you’ll have an easy time finding a solution.

The technical aspects of the game are just as simple as the rest of the elements. As mentioned earlier, the graphics are colorful and quite basic, but they are still pretty smooth and clean. The soundtrack is soothing as well, although you don’t get many chances to listen to it. Funny animations are a blast to watch, on the other hand, such as the look on the bird’s face when it looks directly at a deadly spike.

All things considered, Snakebird is a welcomed sight in the video games world nowadays, because original ideas are hard to come by. Moreover, it’s always fun to put your intelligence and patience to the test, just to see how much punishment your brain can take.
