SkyDrift is the racing game with planes and power-ups from the Digital Reality, the same studio that brought us Sine Mora, Haegemonia: Legions of Iron, and Imperium Galactica.
Arcade racers are usually geared towards fun, so users know not to expect a proper simulation, whether it’s about cars or planes. SkyDrift is an arcade racer, which means that it’s not about the simulation, it’s about the race and beating the other participants. Since it would be boring just to roam around a level, the developers have also added power-ups, making the entire experience a lot more hectic.
Developers from Digital Reality have been slowly moving from serious games to more casual ones, which is not necessarily a bad thing. SkyDrift takes a lot from some of the older games in this category, like Re-Volt for example. It’s a simple recipe that tends to work, especially if the users don’t want any kind of depth.
Since this is an arcade racing game, the penalties for hitting a wall while piloting a plane are not all that harsh. You just respawn. The plane can be controlled with ease, even if the players choose the keyboard, although using a gamepad is a much better idea.
The game is structured with various maps, each of them in another environment, but the idea is the same in each one. Gather the power-ups, and make sure that you beat the AI, which in all fairness is not that good anyhow.
The power-ups are split into offensive and non-offence, which means that players get repair, shield, machine guns, rockets, EMPs, and mines. There aren’t many of them, but the trick is that you can stack them, and you can carry two at a time. If you stack the rockets, for example, you can fire more of them at once.
The movement of the planes is somewhat limited to the map, so don’t expect a lot of freedom. You won’t be doing barrel rolls with these planes. Also, both the graphics and physics engines perform OK, but not all the great overall.
The demo only has a couple of maps to play, including the tutorial.
